Through the scenes of the first Carlist War
In 1835, what are now quiet fields, the scene of one of the toughest battles of the Carlist Wars took place. A route for walkers who enjoy history with panels that help to understand the events that took place here.
The Battle of Mendigorria took place on 15 July 1835 during the First Carlist War. It was one of the most important and bloodiest of the Carlist Wars that took place during the 19th century. The liberal army attacked the Carlist army from the south that was defending the town of Mendigorria where the aspiring King to the throne, Carlos, was. This simple hiking route, equipped with interpretative panels, allows you to walk through the place where it would seem impossible that such a bloody battle took place, as today it is home to peaceful fields of crops. From the Mendigorria swimming pools, the route starts ascending the Camino de la Sierra towards the hills where the Carlist defence line was located. After reaching a hill, the path descends and passes next to the Alto de la Corona, a key position in the battle. A little further on, the route makes a wide loop along farm tracks in the area around Agrero. There it will be necessary to cross the NA-6030 road that leads to Artajona on two occasions. After that, the only thing left to do is to return to Mendigorria along the same route.
