A circular route with mushrooms and fungi as the protagonists
In addition to the ascent to San Pelayo, through forests and areas of mycological interest, there is also the possibility of visiting the pretty villages of Amatriain and Orísoain. A circular route that will take you three and a half hours of walking, comprising of 420 m of positive difference in altitude. Of course, if you are going to pick mushrooms, follow the recommendations.
For years the Valdorba Valley has had a network of six signposted mycological itineraries. One of them is the one that led from Orísoain to Amatriain via the summit of San Pelayo (958 m). The hiking route that we propose, signposted in 2022, is the result of adding to this itinerary a long linking section between Amatriain and Orísoain to obtain a circular route, in such a way that it can be done starting and finishing at the point where we are. The route starts in Amatriain taking a path behind the parish church of San Esteban. You will soon reach a first crossroads where the path that goes up to San Pelayo starts, which in this route we will walk downhill. The route continues along the Camino de Orísoain with hardly any difficulty and after about 4 km you reach the village. There begins the ascent to the mountain of San Pelayo, an uninterrupted ascent of almost 400 m of unevenness alternating tracks and paths. After passing by the hermitage and enjoying the excellent panoramic views, the descent takes place along a narrow path that descends directly to the south and gradually widens until it reaches the vicinity of Amatriain again.
